Join us for an unforgettable event in the west of Ireland at this most magical of times.

The ancient harvest festival of Samhain was one of the most important times in the Celtic calendar. It was at this time that the division between our world and the otherworld was at its thinnest, allowing spirits to move easily between the two. Many Halloween traditions have their roots in this sacred festival, making this a wonderful time of the year to immerse yourself in the magic and mystery of this ancient land.

Leap Castle, Irish haunted castle

In 2018, Baba Studio will host our third annual tour of "Magic Prague", which has proved a huge success and much enjoyed by all who took part. Our move to the beautiful south-west of Ireland in 2016 has reignited Karen's love for the history and mythology of her native country and the stunning landscape has already provided the backdrop for some amazing photoshoots.

Offering tours of "Magic Ireland" seemed a natural progression and so we plan to provide week-long tours beginning in 2019. In the meantime, we are excited to offer the opportunity to spend 5 days with us in October 2018 as we:

  • explore some of the Wild Atlantic Way
  • visit one of Ireland's most haunted castles
  • visit Thoor Ballylee Castle - once the home of famed poet, William Butler-Yeats and his wife, Georgie, leading members of The Golden Dawn esoteric society.
  • view Neolithic monuments in the unique Burren and hear legends of the region
  • cruise the stunning Cliffs of Moher
  • attend the glorious Macnas Halloween parade in Galway City
  • and eat, drink and be merry!

This is the booking payment of $550 with early bird discount (usually $700). The total price for the tour with single room occupancy is $1300 with early bird discount (usually $1450). The early bird discount is available until the end of March.

There will be one more payment of $750 after this booking payment. Second payments are due by the end of March please. Because we have to pay block bookings months in advance no payments will be refundable after April 30 though if you need to cancel after this date for any unforeseen reason, we will do our best to resell your place. If we can do this, we will be able to refund 80% of your payment.

Please see "more details" about what is included

Draft Itinerary (this may change a little but is pretty accurate at this point)

The tour will be led by Karen Mahony, founder of Baba Studio and the designer of the studio's tarot decks, and Cathy Murphy, who works at Baba Studio and has a huge interest in Irish history, folklore and myth.

On Thursday 25th October, we will meet in The Wild Atlantic Lodge in Ballyvaughan, a charming seaside village in the heart of the Burren, right in the middle of the world-famous Wild Atlantic Way. We will spend the next three nights there, exploring the magical history and myth of this wonderful region. We have arranged some very special trips, all done in the comfort of our own coach.

Ballyvaughan is conveniently located approximately 1.25 hours drive from Shannon International Airport and 1.5 hours from Knock Airport and we will be happy to advise you on the easiest way to travel to Ballyvaughan from whatever airport you arrive in. Airport transfers can also be arranged.

On Sunday 28th October, we will travel by our own coach to Galway City where you will stay the night in the Park House Hotel, a 4 star hotel in the heart of the city. We will attend the Macnas Halloween parade on Sunday evening, a highlight of the Irish Halloween festivities!

The tour will finish on the morning of Monday 29th October. We can help with airport transfers if you require them.

Thursday 25th October

We will assemble in The Wild Atlantic Lodge for a meet and greet on Thursday afternoon. Afterwards, you will have some free time to settle in and to explore the village and seashore.

Located in a green wooded vale on the south shores of Galway Bay, Ballyvaughan is a picturesque spot. It is in the northwest corner of The Burren - a unique landscape of Karst limestone of outstanding significance in terms of its natural history, geology, and archaeology, and home to some of Ireland's most spectacular Neolithic tombs.

On Thursday evening, you will enjoy a buffet dinner in the hotel restaurant and experience the best of Irish hospitality in a cozy pub.

Friday 26th October

In the morning, a short coach trip will bring you to The Burren where you will meet with an expert local guide. You will see Poulnabrone Dolmen, a portal tomb dating back to the Neolithic period around 3,800 BC, which has become an iconic image of ancient Ireland. You will learn about the incredible history and mythology of the area.

The Burren, Irish myths, lord of the rings, gollum, magical ireland

On the way back to Ballyvaughan, we will stop at The Burren Perfumery where we will enjoy a light lunch in the beautiful surroundings and have an opportunity to see and buy soaps, perfumes and lotions, all made in Ireland with Irish scents.

In the afternoon we will travel by coach to visit the Cliffs of Moher. Featured in movies such as Ryan's Daughter, The Princess Bride and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the Cliffs are Ireland's most-visited natural attraction.
We will take a ferry from the charming fishing village of Doolin and enjoy an hour-long sightseeing cruise that offers you incredible views of these majestic cliffs (weather permitting). Afterwards, we will take you up to the Visitor Centre where you have the chance to see the Cliffs and O' Brien's Tower from above!
Following approximately two hours at the Cliffs, we will travel by coach to the charming fishing village of Doolin. Here we will enjoy a dinner at a local restaurant/pub.

After dinner, the bus will take us back to The Wild Atlantic Lodge in Ballyvaughan.

Saturday 27th October

Today we will travel to Leap Castle, said to be Ireland's most haunted castle (and an extraordinary place!).

After breakfast, we will board the coach which will take us to Thoor Ballylee Castle - once the home of famed Irish poet, William Butler-Yeats and his wife Georgie. Both were members of The Golden Dawn esoteric society and in her romantic tower home Georgie practised automatic writing - which became the basis of Yeats' book, The Vision.

I, the poet William Yeats,
With old mill boards and sea-green slates,
And smithy work from the Gort forge,
Restored this tower for my wife George.
And may these characters remain
When all is ruin once again.

Nobel-winning poet Seamus Heaney once described this well-preserved fourteenth-century tower as the most important building in Ireland. It was here that Yeats was inspired to write some of his finest poetry during summers spent with his family.

At Leap Castle, we will be given a tour by the hospitable owner, the musician Sean Ryan. Dating back to the early 1500's, the castle has a horrific history, having been the site of gruesome murders and bloody atrocities. It is haunted by a number of ghosts, including The Red Lady, The Governess, and two little girls called Emily and Charlotte. It is also reputed to be haunted by an Elemental.

On our way back to Ballyvaughan, we will stop at Kilmacduagh, a ruined monastic site and graveyard that features beautiful Celtic crosses, ruined churches, and the tallest round tower in Ireland - all dating from the 11th to 13th centuries.

Dinner tonight will be in the restaurant at The Wild Atlantic Lodge -- known for its good food. There will be live traditional music in the bar afterwards or you can choose to explore some other local bars.

Sunday 28th October

This morning, we will say goodbye to The Wild Atlantic Lodge and travel by our own coach to Galway City to the Park House Hotel, a 4 star hotel in the heart of the city, where we will enjoy a light lunch in Boss Doyle’s Bar.

You will then have free time to explore this captivating city and we will supply you with plenty of suggestions for souvenir shopping, sightseeing and nice places to pop in for coffee or a drink.

We will meet back at the hotel at 4.30 to make our way together to see the Macnas Halloween Parade. In their own words, Macnas are "master storytellers who inspire and engage audiences by creating big, bold, visual shows and performances through world-class theatrical spectacle." Their Halloween Parade has become a highlight of Ireland's cultural calendar, with more than 40,000 lining the streets of the city to view it. The atmosphere is unforgettable.

Afterwards, we will go for a farewell dinner at a city centre restaurant, before making our way back to the hotel. Of course, if you want to continue enjoying the famed Irish pub scene, you are more than welcome to!
Monday 29th October
Following breakfast, we will say our goodbyes as we check out of the hotel. We are happy to provide information on your onward journey and can help you to arrange transport to the airport.

Is this a tarot tour?
No, it's a broader tour about magic in a wide sense. We may certainly include discussion of tarot and cartomancy, especially when we go to Thoor Ballylee (Karen and Alex are now the owners/custodians of Georgie Yeats' own tarot deck).

Is this the only Magic Ireland tour that Baba Studio does?
We will be offering two Magic Ireland tours in early summer 2019, in addition to possibly repeating the Halloween tour (this is not yet certain). Both of the summer tours will be one week, and they will be offered one after another for those who want to do two weeks touring. One will focus on the ancient east of Ireland, the other will be focused on the west and south-west, including Kerry and Killarney where Baba Studio is based. These tours will include a tarot element.

Will I get reward points on this purchase?
Yes! Once the tour is over it will be our pleasure to give you our normal points on the entire purchase. Just as a thank-you treat from us.

The points can be used to purchase anything you'd like on Baba Store.

Is it for occultists?
Not really. It's not intended to be very academic or heavy-going, though the information we give you will be carefully researched and the tours will be conducted by professional, knowledgeable guides. We won't be studying in-depth magical lore or history, but we will be discussing (and experiencing) this in an enjoyable way, and there will definitely be a chance to further your knowledge.

Can I just do part of the tour and arrange my own accommodation/meals etc?
We've organised the tour to be a group event and this has allowed us to negotiate fantastic deals and discounts with the hotel and with restaurants. If you would rather organise your own meals and accommodation that's fine, but please understand that you will still need to pay the full tour fee so that this remains good value for all participants.

Which hotel will I be staying at?
Ideally located in the heart of The Burren, The Wild Atlantic Lodge is a cosy hotel in the charming harbour village of Ballyvaughan. All of the comfortable bedrooms are en-suite and come with a TV, tea and coffee-making facilities, and free wifi.

The Wildflower Restaurant serves the top-quality Irish produce and as well as providing breakfast each morning, will be our venue for dinner on Thursday and Saturday.

The Snug Bar is right next door where you can sample the best of Irish hospitality (and Guinness!) and enjoy traditional music on Saturday night.

Recognised for excellence in both accommodation and food, the 4-Star Park House Hotel is perfectly situated in the heart of Galway city, making it an ideal base for exploring this vibrant city.

The luxurious and spacious bedrooms are all en-suite with multi-channel TV, tea/coffee making facilities, luxury eco-friendly toiletries, and complimentary high speed wifi.

What about cancellations, are they possible?
Until the end of April 2018, we are happy to cancel and refund in full. After that period, we will not be able to refund. This is because we negotiate group booking discounts for the tour. Please do take out your own travel insurance against having to cancel for any reasons beyond your control. Thanks for your understanding.

What happens if the tour does not go ahead?
Cancellation looks unlikely as there seems to be a great deal of interest in this tour.

If we did have to cancel for any unforeseen reason, we will refund in full except for any PayPal or credit card fees that we can't recover. To make up for any fees that are non-recoverable, we will give credit on our shop.

 * May be subject to change although if so, we will substitute an event that is, in our opinion, of equal interest.

Medical emergencies

The health services in Ireland are generally good, but you may be charged for any medical treatment required while you are here.

Please do take out travel insurance and/or if you are a European Union citizen, please check what documents you may need to bring to get free or reduced cost medical care should you need it.

Please let us know in advance if you have any physical or psychological medical conditions that could cause problems when you are here. In particular, please inform us of any dietery allergies, and/or allergies to environmental items such as feathers or anything else that might effect your health and comfort when you’re in Ireland. All such information will be treated in confidence and will not be disclosed to anyone else without your permission.

Co-operation and social interaction and behaviour
We expect everyone to have a great time and to make new friends. However, in the rare instance of someone behaving in a way that impacts on the comfort or safety of others on the tour, we reserve the right to remove them from the tour, without complaint or claim against us. This will normally only be done after discussion to see if there is any other way to resolve the issue.

After the end of April, payments for this tour are non-refundable except if the tour is cancelled by us.
To make this tour excellent value for money, we’ve negotiated group discounts for hotels, tours and meals and most of these have to be paid many months in advance.

This means that we won’t be able to refund any payments made, unless you cancel before the end of April 2018. Please do consider taking out insurance to cover your expenses if you have to cancel.

Physical activity

Please bring comfortable, flat walking shoes. Although this tour does not involve any long walks, we will be walking in some moderately demanding terrain at times (the Burren is stony and uneven).

Ireland is notorious for its rain! Bring something waterproof and umbrellas in case of rain. Tours will normally go ahead if the rain is not too heavy.

Bring a good, secure bag for anything you want to carry. Though Ireland is not known for pick-pocketing, we will be in crowds during the Macnas parade.

Tour forms & obligations
Tour members will be required to sign & return necessary forms along with their deposit. These will include a release of liability form, an emergency information form and a tour terms and conditions agreement.

Because of the need to keep costs down, and also because not all venues would be covered, we have no protection coverage. Please arrange your own international travel insurance before you travel.

We will make every effort to keep to the itineraries described. However, we are not liable for any delay in, change to or cancellation of any part of this tour due to means beyond reasonable control including but not limited to war or threat of war, riot, civil strife, terrorist activity, industrial or nuclear disaster, adverse weather conditions, fire, earthquake and strikes. Furthermore, in order to operate the tour we require a minimum number of 16 full paying participants. If the minimum number is not met, we reserve the right to cancel the tour; in which case we will refund money paid by you for the tour.

Complaints and feedback
If you have any complaints or feedback about the tour, please let one of the organisers know as soon as possible. We want you to be happy with the tour and welcome all feedback and suggestions.

In order to be able to run this tour and cater for your needs, we will need to collect certain information from you, some of which may be personal. The information may be disclosed to our partners and service providers if necessary. This will not be used by them for any other purposes.

Publicity and Promotion
You agree that we can use images of you taken during the tour or feedback that you share with us. We will try to okay these with you in advance of any publication but can't guarantee to do so. You also agree that we will not offer compensation to you or be in any way liable for material used for publicity & promotion purposes.

Signing our waiver form
We will be asking you to sign a waiver form before you come on the tour. On request, we can send you a copy of this to review - it's a fairly standard tour waiver form.
